You are tired. The gas money is real. So here is the short version of why August still matters. The July evaluation periods ended July 26. For the rest of the summer, Division I coaches are in what the NCAA calls a quiet period. A quiet period does not stop recruiting. It moves recruiting onto campus. What a D1 coach cannot do right now: Watch your daughter play at a travel game, showcase or practice anywhere off their campus. What a D1 coach can do right now: Meet your family in person on their campus, and watch your daughter play at their own camp. That is the whole reason to register. For the next four weeks, a college camp is the only place a D1 staff can legally see your daughter play in person. The August Calendar at a Glance August 1 to 31 is a quiet period. Coaches are on campus and available. Camps count. August 10 to 16 is a recruiting shutdown. No contact, no evaluations, no visits, no emails, no phone calls. If your daughter reaches out that week and hears nothing back, that is the rule at work, not a coach passing on her. Follow up on August 17. Set Your Expectations Correctly This is the part parents most often get wrong, so it is worth being plain about. A college camp puts one school’s staff in the gym, evaluating your daughter on their floor, for their roster. She gets four to six hours of their attention, direct coaching from the people who would actually coach her, and a look at the campus she would live on. A college camp is not a live period event. Coaches from ten other programs are not in the building. If the goal is exposure to many schools at once, August is the wrong month. So choose on purpose. A camp at a school that has already emailed her, already watched her in July, or already sits on her list is worth far more than a camp picked because the date was open on the calendar. Five Things That Make the Day Pay Off 1. Email the staff before you go. Name, grad year, position, height, and the camp date she is attending. Ask what they want to see from her. 2. Have her introduce herself in person. Name, grad year, high school, travel program. Coaches see hundreds of players. Give them a reason to connect a name to the jersey number. 3. Remind her what actually gets evaluated. Effort, communication, defensive stance, sprinting the floor. Staffs watch closely how a player competes when she does not have the ball. 4. Have one real question ready. What do you look for in a guard at this level? What would I need to add to play here? A good question is remembered longer than a good crossover. 5. Follow up within 48 hours. Thank the staff, mention something specific they coached her on, attach her film. Just remember the August 10 to 16 shutdown and time it around that week. A Note on Division II Everything above describes the Division I calendar. Division II runs on a separate recruiting calendar with its own dates and rules. Do not assume a D1 quiet period restriction applies to a D2 program. If a D2 school is in the picture, ask that staff directly what their calendar allows. Florida Nation Basketball.
